Retratos y Memorias

Español: Como niña tenía memorias intensas de alucinaciones que me pasaban por que tenía fiebres altísimas y entonces alucinaba. Recuerdo en nuestra casa en Connecticut, cuando era niña, eso pasaba y recuerdo viendo, recuerdo corriendo por el pasillo de mi cuarto al de mis papas, y me senté muy derechita en la cama en la media noche y vi un tiburón nadando en el aire hacia mí. Veía, si había una mancha en la funda de la almohada, la mancha se movía a través de la funda, y trataría de pegarla y pararla, pero al levantar la mano, aun se movía. Creo que estas alucinaciones son algunas de mis primeras memorias.

English: I had, as a kid, I have really vivid memories of hallucinations that I used to have because I used to get really high fevers and then I would hallucinate. So I remember in our house in Connecticut, when I was a toddler that happening and I remember seeing, I remember running down the hall from my room to my parents room and then behind me seeing these cartoon people rolling up the carpet behind me as I went, and then I remember being in my parents room, just sitting up in the middle of the night and seeing a shark swimming through the air towards me. I would see, like if there was a spot on my pillowcase, it would start moving across the pillowcase and I would try to hit it and stop it, but when I would lift my hand up it would continue to move. I think those early hallucinations are some of my first memories.

Español: Mi primera memoria fue cuando, en la mañana de la navidad recibí mi gatito Princesa, y ella era todavía un gatito, probablemente con solo unas cuantas semanas de edad, y esta memoria es muy importante para mí porque ella murió el año pasado, el enero pasado. Es mi primera memoria.

English: My first memory was when, on Christmas morning when I got my little kitty Princess, and she was just a kitten, probably just a few weeks old at that point, and it’s kind of an important memory to me because she just died last year, last January. It’s like my first memory ever.”

Español: Mi primera memoria es de cuando tenía dos o tres años. Nuestra familia vivía en el rancho Nichols en Paraíso-Avon, el condado de Cache, noreste de Logan. Yo estaba jugando afuera en el verano y mientras caminaba por el lado de la casa de madera vieja vi una serpiente de cascabel justo al lado de la ruta que habían sido usado por muchos de estos viajes. No recuerdo tener miedo, ¡pero mis padres que no estaban demasiado lejos, rápidamente se hicieron cargo de la situación y me llevaron de vuelta a el camino que acababa de atravesar!

English: My first memory occurred when I was about two or three. Our family was living at the Nichols Ranch in Paradise-Avon, Cache County, Northeast of Logan. I was playing outside in the summer and as I walked around the side of the old wood house I saw a rattlesnake just off the path that had been worn by many such trips. I don't remember being afraid, but my parents who were not too faraway, quickly took charge of the situation and I was whisked back to the path I had just transversed!

Español: Mi primera memoria, tenía como 7, 8 años, estábamos en yo no sabía que estaban buscando mis hermanos, solo sabía que estábamos buscando algo, era la época de navidad.  Entonces estábamos yendo por los closets y yo como soy la menor solo los estaba siguiendo para ver lo que estaban buscando, y de repente Karen, mi hermana mayor abrió el closet de mis papas y bien arriba, arriba en la parte de arriba vimos una tela café, como que si fueran pantalones cafés, entonces bien triste ella dijo “ah, todavía no los han comprado,” y yo todavía no tenía ni pisa de lo que estábamos buscando, entonces viene y, tenía 7 anos, viene y, bueno, paso bastante tiempo y, vino la navidad y cuando abrí los regalos recibí un muñeco que tenía pantalones cafés, entonces allí me di cuenta que mis papas eran los que compraban juguetes. Esa es la primera memoria que tengo.

English: My first memory, I was about 7, 8 years old, we were in, I did not know what my siblings were looking for, I just knew we were looking for something, it was Christmas time. So we were going through the closets and as I am the youngest I was just following them to see what they were looking for, and suddenly Karen, my older sister opened my parents and high high up, at the top we saw a brown cloth, like brown pants, then they were very sad, and she said "ah, they have not bought them yet," and I still did not have any idea what we were looking for, I was 7 years old, she comes and, well,  a lot of time passes and, Christmas comes and when I opened my gifts I  had received a doll with brown pants, then I realized that my parents were the ones who bought toys. That is the first memory I have.

Español: De verdad no me gusta esta pregunta porque nunca puedo recordarme de que es mi primera memoria. Cuando personas hablan de su primera memoria yo realmente no sé cuál es mi primera memoria. Uhh, ummmm, uno de ellos es, yo estaba caminando con mi madre y nuestros amigos, estábamos caminando nuestros peros, y mi madre y el padre de nuestros amigos decidieron cambiar correas. Caminaban los perros, y mi madre estaba caminando los dos perros que pertenecían a nuestros amigos, y yo estaba en sus hombros, y los perros se asustaron y mi mama tropezó y se cayó y yo volé de sus hombros y aterricé en mi espalda. Sólo estábamos unas pocas cuadras de mi casa, así que volvimos a mi casa. Yo estaba gritando y llorando. Me había raspado la espalda con tanta fuerza que tuvieron que despegar mi camiseta de mi espalda porque había tanta sangre. Yo estaba sentada en la cesta de mi madre en su cuarto de baño mientras ella estaba limpiando mi espalda. Yo tenía probablemente cinco años.

English: I actually really hate this question because I can never remember what my first memory is. Like whenever people talk about their oldest memory I really actually don’t know what my oldest memory is. Uhh, ummmm, one of them is, I was walking with my mom and our friends, we were walking dogs, and my mom and the dad of our friends decided to switch leashes, so switch the dogs they were walking, so my mom was walking 2 dogs that weren’t ours and I was on her shoulders, I was riding on her shoulders, and the dogs got scared and tripped her and she fell and I flew off of her shoulders onto my back, and we were only a few blocks away from my house, so we went back to my house. I was screaming and crying, and I scraped my back so hard that they had to peal off my t-shirt because it was all bloody, and I was just sitting on my mom’s hamper in her bathroom while she was cleaning my back. I was probably 5.

Español: Sentándome en el lodo en el patio de atrás en mi Tucson barrio casa, jugando, cubriéndome en lodo de lluvia de monzón.

English: Sitting in the dirt in the backyard of my Tucson barrio home, playing, and covering myself with mud from the monsoon rain. 

Español: Tengo dos memorias de cuando viví en Fort Collins, Colorado, tenia probablemente, 2 o 3 anos, alrededor de 3 anos. La primera es, no sé cuál realmente vino primero, pero, en el primero estoy mirando arriba, yo era muy pequeña, mirando hacia arriba y vi las luces arriba, y mi hermano Nathan, quien nació un poco más de 2 años después de mí, estaba en la mesa y mi madre le estaba sosteniendo y hablaba con urgencia con alguien, y yo sólo me acuerdo de las luces por encima de la mesa, y mirando hacia arriba. Más tarde aprendí que el había tragado una aspirina para bebé y él estaba sofocándose, y estábamos en un hospital. La otra memoria, más o menos al mismo tiempo, jugaba en nuestro patio bajo el sol y entre en una caja de cartón, y volteé la caja de cartón y vi un punto de luz en la esquina de la caja, todo estaba oscuro menos ese punto de luz."

English: I have two memories from when I lived in Fort Collins, Colorado, so I would have been 2 or 3 probably, somewhere around 3. The first one is, I don’t know which one actually comes first but, first one is looking up, so I was little, looking up and seeing the lights above and my brother Nathan who was born a little over 2 years after me, was on the counter and my mother was holding him and talking urgently to somebody and I just remember the lights above the counter, and looking up. I learned later that he had swallowed some baby aspirin and he was choking and we were at a hospital. The other memory, right about the same time is, playing in our front yard in the sunshine and getting into a cardboard box, and turning the cardboard box over on the ground and seeing through a spot in one of the corners light coming through, so it was all dark except for the light bit of light coming through the corner.

Español: Yo, cuando yo, cuando estábamos en Argentina, no sé, es muy confuso, no sé si realmente sucedió, pero, estaba, no recuerdo quién era nuestra niñera, pero me estaba escondiendo detrás del sofá en nuestro apartamento y yo estaba escondiéndome, jugando, escondiéndome de nuestra niñera, y su hija estaba.

English: I, when I, when we were in Argentina, I don’t know, it’s really hazy, I don’t know if it actually happened, but, I was, I don’t remember who our nanny was, but I was hiding behind the couch in our apartment and I was hiding from, playing, hiding from our nanny, and her daughter was there.

Español: No se. Estaba dormida encima de mi mama, y yo la estaba abrasando, y si.

English: I don’t know. I was asleep on my mom, and I was hugging her, and yeah.

Español: Um, probablemente cuando baje el resbaladero en la falda de Kaite y ella, mi prima, ella quebró la muñeca. Yo estaba sentada en su regazo y bajamos un resbaladero que estaba dentro de un tubo, y después ella se calló y se quebró la muñeca y tuvimos que llevarla al hospital.

English: Um, probably going down the slide on Katie’s lap when she, my cousin, when she broke her wrist. I was on her lap and we went down a slide that was in a tube and then she fell of and she broke her wrist and we had to take her to the hospital.

Español: Hmmm, pienso que fue… cuando metí mi pie en mi pastel. Cuando tenía, pienso que fue mi primer cumpleaños, yo metí mi pie en mi pastel de cumpleaños.

English: Hmmm, I think…when I stuck my foot in my cake. When I was, I think it was my first birthday, I stuck my foot in my birthday cake.

Español: Cuando vi mi primer arco iris. Yo estaba…en…yo estaba manejando a la casa de mi bisabuela y era gigante, y de repente había…de repente el cielo comenzó a ponerse gris, pero nadie se dio cuenta excepto yo, y después de repente una tormenta gigantesca con dos puntos de luz, y también había mucha bruma y cuando la tormenta se fue había un arco iris GIGANTE en el cielo, con colores muy, muy, muy, muy, muy, brillantes.

English: When I saw my first rainbow. I was like…at…I was driving to my great-grandmothers house and it was huge, and all of the sudden there was…all of the sudden the sky started to get grey, but nobody noticed except me and then I, and then all of a sudden this gigantic storm with two spots of sunlight, and it was also really foggy and once the storm was gone there was this HUGE rainbow in the sky like really, really, really, really, really, bright colors. 

Español: -Respiraciones profundas.- -Nieve crujiendo.- Si, si, si. Yo uno.

English: -Deep breathing.- -Snow crunching.- Yes, yes, yes. I one.

Español: Mi primer recuerdo? Ummm, probablemente cuando rompí mi clavícula cuando tenía 4 anos. Recuerdo que mi madre acaba de regresar de una cita con mi padre, y era verano, así que me pidió que abriera las ventanas para que pudiéramos dejar la brisa del cañón entrar en la casa. Yo entré a mi habitación y abrí la ventana. Yo estaba presionando mis manos contra la pantalla para bajarme porque tenía que bajarme y la pantalla salió y yo fui hacia abajo y golpee la ventana de abajo con un golpe seco, lo próxima cosa que recuerdo es mi hermano sacándome de la ventana de abajo. ... tu fiesta de cumpleaños paso antes de eso? Porque si sí, eso es mi primera memoria.”

English: My first memory ever? Ummm, probably breaking my collarbone when I was 4. I just remember before, my mom had just gotten home from a date with my dad, and it was the summer time so she asked me to open up the windows so we could let the canyon breeze flow in the evening, and so I went in my room and I lifted up the window and I was pressing my hands against the screen to help me down because I had to climb off of the ledge and it gave way and I went down and hit the window well below me with a thud, and then my brother, the next thing I remember is my brother reaching down to pull me out of the window well…was your birthday party before that? Because if so, that’s my first memory
